We've all seen, or been, the parents in the grocery store that give their kids a box of powdered donuts just to avoid a colossal, history making, insane meltdown. Does it sound like I'm speaking from experience? Well, I hate to admit it, but this was a very real situation for me one day. Our 4 year old just could not stand the thought of travelling the bread isle without getting her sweet little hands on those donuts. I could not sneak my way past them fast enough and then the dreaded words, then screams came from her mouth. It had been a very long day, so I just gave in, and became a permissive parent. Permissive parenting is not a habit worth keeping.
Permissive parenting is very low on parental demandingness, yet extremely high in responsiveness. These parents indulge their children's every need, want or desire. They want to be friends with their children, therefore, discipline is thrown out the window. There are few rules put in place, and those that are present are very inconsistent.
Children from this type environment have never heard the word 'no'. The do not understand that they can't have everything that they want. Most of these children have very little self-control, do not follow rules, and lack social skills. Their academics struggle and they are more prone to substance abuse due to the lack of direction provided by their parents. Watch this video and you'll see what I mean.
